Court Orders sisters be raped as punishment after brother elopes with married woman

A village court in India, ordered men to rape 2 sisters as punishment after their brother eloped with a married woman. The sisters managed to flee before the punishment was carried out, and they are now fearing for their lives. 23-year-old Meenakshi Kumari and her 15-year-old sister fled their village of Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, with their family, fearing violence after their brother eloped with the married woman.

According to their parents, a group of elected members of the village council, all of whom are men, ordered Kumari and her sister raped and paraded around naked with their faces blackened as punishment for the actions of their brother.

The sisters and their parents fled to Delhi, where they filed a petition with the Supreme Court, seeking protection for their family so they can go home.

The family said that they are also concerned for the safety of the married woman who eloped with their brother. The woman claims that she is pregnant with his child.

Kumari’s father, Sumit Kumar, also filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission, alleging harassment by the police in their hometown.

According to the father, the police refused to help them after the council ruling.

The Supreme Court ordered Uttar Pradesh officials to reply to the petition within a month. “After we went to the Supreme Court, the villagers became even more aggressive,” Sumit said.
