Was Joan Rivers a victim of her own words?
Last Wednesday, during an hour-long stand-up show at the Laurie Beechman Theater in New York, Joan Rivers told one of her favourite jokes. ‘I’m 81,’ it went. ‘I could go at any moment. I could fall over right here, on stage. And then you could all say: “I was there!”
On Thursday morning, less than 12 hours after she had taken her bow at the Laurie Beecham Theater, Rivers suffered a major cardiac arrest while undergoing vocal cord surgery, which triggered a stroke.
She was put into a medically induced coma and has remained unconscious ever since.
