How i survived fire that gutted my house- Obasanjo
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday recounted what transpired during the fire incident that gutted a part of his palatial building in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, last week, saying he would have died in the inferno.
According to Obasanjo, if not for divine intervention that made the fire to break out in the afternoon and not midnight, he would have been suffocated to death and become history.
He was full of praises to God for sparing his life and for the opportunity to witness a new year, stressing that the smoke that beclouded his room would have killed him.
While recounting the experience, Obasanjo said many documents and consumables were destroyed in the inferno.
He said: “The fire, which occurred in the office of my Private Secretary, resulted in thick smoke, which pervaded my bedroom.
If it had happened at night, I would have been a dead person by now. I want to thank all, and all those who called me on phone both within and outside the country.
Let us appreciate the mercy and kindness of God. There are many, we started last year together, but no more today.
We are not mocking them, but to extol God. In fact, that I am able to stand erect is God’s blessing.
Many of my age group cannot stand well. “I am not mocking them, but I am thanking God.”
While disclosing that he continued to receive telephone calls from within and outside Nigeria over the incident, the statesman prayed that the New Year would be a glorious one for the country.
Wife walks out on two-day-old marriage
Laure Sulaiman, yesterday got her wish from a Kaduna Sharia Court II, Magajin Gari, to dissolve her two-day-old marriage to Babangida Dan-Auta of Maraban Jos.
Laure had on December 10 last year asked the court to dissolve the marriage, saying she was no longer in love with Dan-Auta.
The husband, however, told the court that the wife was hiding something as she had demanded for divorce only two days after their marriage.
Laure had told the court: “I don’t love him and I want this court to grant me divorce. I am ready to return the N10,000 he paid as dowry. I cannot be obedient to him as a wife.’’
Dan-Auta disputed the wife’s claim on the amount paid as dowry. He said that he paid N17, 000 and not N10,000.
He said that the woman, who was divorced before their marriage, had also lied to him on the number of her children.
According to Laure’s husband, though she told him she had three kids, he later found out that she had given birth to eight children from a previous marriage.
He noted that the woman left their home two days after the wedding, asking him to divorce her.
The Khadi, Malam Ibrahim Inuwa, had adjourned the case three times before acceeding to the request for divorce. He had earlier given the couple up to yesterday to reconcile their differences.
At yesterday’s sitting, the couple, however, opted for divorce, saying that they were unable to resolve their differences.
Inuwa, therefore, ordered Laure to pay back the N17,000 dowry by tomorrow (January 4) before the marriage could be legally dissolved.
Dana Air resumes flights today
At last, embattled domestic operator, Dana Air, commenced its scheduled domestic operations today with a Lagos-Abuja service.
The airline went off the skies on June 3, 2012, when the aviation mmmministry via the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) suspended its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) following the crash of one of its MD 83 jets in Iju Ishaga area of Lagos that killed 163 people and destroyed property worth billions of naira.
Since then, the airline had battled for its return into operation and on December 5, 2012, the NCAA issued new AOC to the airline after it satisfactorily scaled the safety audit.
But the regulatory agency, NCAA, told the airline management in clear terms that it would not be allowed to fly until it begins to pay the outstanding 70 per cent of the $100,000 to families of victims of the crash as stipulated by law.
Having also showed sufficient evidence of this, the NCAA gave the airline the all clear nod to commence scheduled operations.
Reacting to the resumption of flights, the spokesman of Dana Group, Tony Usidamen, extolled the NCAA for its support, adding that the airline would begin with a Lagos-Abuja-Lagos flight today, after which it would gradually introduce other routes it hitherto flew to.
