Akpabio came under fire after he, on Friday, announced a gift of two brand new Toyota Prado SUVs to Tuface and his wife. He was also quoted as promising to bankroll an all-expense paid trip for 29 delegates from the state to attend the white wedding of the couple fixed for Dubai, the United Arab Emirate on March 23.

House of Representatives orders banks to stop planned introduction of N100 ATM fee

The House of Representatives yesterday asked commercial banks in Nigeria to halt the planned introduction of N100 monthly maintenance fee on ATM cards.

The House further mandated its Committee on Banking and Currency to investigate all approved bank charges on all accounts and compliance by banks and report back in two weeks.

Also, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Sanusi Lamido Sanusi and other relevant authorities were asked to “urgently look into the issue and act as appropriate.”

Rep Aliu Babatunde Kazeem who moved the motion disclosed that the Bankers’ Committee during a meeting in November 2012 had scrapped the N100 interbank charges on the use of ATM cards wondered why other charges are being introduced through the back door.

Rep Kazeem particularly mentioned First Bank of Nigeria Plc which was on the verge of commencing a monthly deduction of maintenance fee on their ATM cards with effect from March 2013.

“If this maintenance fee is introduced, it will reduce the patronage of ATMs thereby affecting adversely the financial inclusion strategy of the Central Bank of Nigeria,” he said.

Okada Riders to undergo alcoholic, psychiatric tests in Ogun State

Any motorcyclist caught riding against traffic in Ogun State would henceforth be made to undergo alcoholic and psychiatric tests to ascertain their mental state.

Corps Commander of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps(TRACE) in the state, Commander Ayo Sangofadeji, said this in Abeokuta at a stakeholders’ meeting with Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria of Nigeria (ACOMORAN) and the Accredited Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (AMORAN).

While such action would no longer be tolerated, Sangofadeji added, “defaulters will henceforth be made to go for psychiatric test, and this is apart from the fines that such defaulting motorcyclists would be made to pay.”

Sangofadeji lamented that accidents involving motorcyclists in the state occur due to contravention of traffic rules which include non usage of crash helmet, overloading, over speeding and driving against the traffic.

Robbers attack Lagos Airport again, cart away huge sum of foreign currencies

Heavily armed robbers yesterday Wednesday night stormed the International Wing of the Murtala Mohammed Airport Lagos, killed two policemen and made away with a huge amount of foreign currencies from some bureau-de-change operators at the nation’s premier gateway, officials said.

The robbers who arrived the airport some few minutes to nine, headed for the BDC operators centre near the car park and started shooting sporadically, eyewitnesses said.

The robbers, numbering over 10, engaged policemen attached to the airport in a gun duel for about 30 minutes which resulted in the death of two policemen and one armed robber.

Confirming the robbery, General Manager, Corporate Communications, Mr. Yakubu Dati, said he could only confirm the death of one of the robbers while the level of casualties was being ascertained.

He added, “The situation has since been brought under control by the swift intervention of joint security force. They were apparently attempting to rob a bureau de change operator near the airport. Normal operations and flight have not been affected by the incident.”

The unfortunate incidence has once again exposed the porous security network of the nation’s flagship airport as this is the second attempt on BDC operators at the Lagos airport.
